Utilizing Our Stainless Brewing Filters
On my previous brews, I used a home made hop spider made of a nylon paint filter and a disposal drain sink connector. At best it did an adequate job, but still did not filter out a good portion of the hops. I also used stainless steel nuts to weigh the filter bag to prevent the hops from boiling out. Clean up with a hassle, and since the bag was nylon, this meant replacing the bag once it turned green.
Now enter Utah Biodiesel Supply Hop Spider and a world of difference. As you can see by the picture of my brew kettle the hop spider kept all of the hops in the filter and the wort was clear with no hops. I used the hop spider first for the wort run off to filter out any grains or fines. You can also tell by the pictures of the fermenters which one use the stainless steel hop spider. There is about a three inch difference in material between the two. The hop filter contained 6 ounces of hops with plenty of room to spare. Clean up is a snap, drop the spent hops in the garbage, then a quick rinse before your equipment cleanup.
I would highly recommend purchasing hop filters from Utah Biodiesel and if you have any questions, Graydon is wonderful to work with.
- Mark J
Height: - Select a hop spider that can reach to within 1" to 3" of the bottom of your kettle. By keeping off the bottom slightly you allow better wort circulation up through the bottom of the hop spider.
Straight Side Hooks: - We give our filters plenty of room on their side hooks to grip the outer edge of brewing kettles.
For example below is a picture of our 10.5" diameter hop spider sitting on a 21" diameter opening. As you can see there's
plenty of room even at 21" diameter for it to hook, even if the kettle had a 1/2" lip.
For stubborn protein and hop residue, soak at 180° F in PBW. Let soak overnight & rinse with hot water.
The basket is made from 100% 304 stainless steel. The stainless mesh is available in 300 or 400 micron, which based on experience among home brewers seems to be the sweet spot for containing the hops. For pellet hops, 300 micron works the best and 400 micron works best with whole leaf hops. 400 micron will also work with pellet hops, but 300 micron tends to contain the dust better.
We've also had several customers use these filters to brew coffee and tea with as well. Customers have told us that these filters rock! Especially when used with hot brewing where plastic filters tend to melt.
If your brewing kettle is just taller than 10", this filter is the ideal hop spider, hops filter as it gives you plenty of surface area for brewing, stays off the bottom, and still sits flush with the top of your brewing kettle so it won't get in the way.
The 4" Diameter brewing filters can utilize up to 4 oz of hops effectively. Need to utilize more hops? Check out our larger filters below!

"I just bought a kettle hop screen & two of the carboy dry-hop screens a few weeks ago. Kettle screen is AWESOME!!! I can't ever imagine going back to bags, seriously saves me 30 minutes on my brew day.... The quality was super awesome, I will be definitely telling anyone who will listen to get your stuff." - John Fauller

To fit a variety of brew kettles, these brew filters are 6" diameter and can be purchased in 10", 11", 12", 14", 16", and 19" tall. They each have two hangers on the side to attach them to a brewing kettle. One hanger spans all the way across the filter to make a nice handle for removing the filter from the brewing kettle.
We stock all our 6" filters in 300 micron and stock the 6"x14" in 400 micron as well. The 6" stainless brewing filters can also be ordered in 400 micron but are built only when ordered and may take up to 2 weeks to ship.
Recommended Batch Size: 6" Diameter works great with brew kettles up to 12 gallons.
"I'm really liking how easy the hop filter makes things, especially with a hoppy IPA that has multiple additions
throughout the boil. We did a 10 gallon batch and used around 400g of hops in the boil and it was so easy.
Cleanup was a breeze." - Justin from Australia

9 3/4" x 8" 800 Micron Mash Strainer | BACK TO TOP
For screen material, we went with our heavy duty 800 micron screen. This size is perfect for most grains in that it doesn't plug up like say a 600 micron screen might but also doesn't let the mash through like a 1000 micron screen might. It's also the most popular micron size of our kettle screens making it ideal for straining mash.
Finally, to make it extremely easy to handle, we added a heavy duty stainless steel handle that lets you easily move the strainer around and then quickly swings out of your way once the strainer is in place.
In short, if you're looking for the ultimate portable mash strainer that'll work with a wide selection of brewing kettles, then you'll absolutely love this strainer! Grab one today & make straining your mash a cinch!

In our experience, this works out to:
You can certainly put more hops in the container if you choose, but keep in mind that both pellet hops and whole leaf hops will expand. If you were to pack the vessel to the brim, this expansion will likely cause the hops in the center of the vessel to not be in contact with your beer.
Filling up any of our dry hoppers too much will result not only in poor utilization, but also a vessel that is difficult to clean and should probably be soaked if not boiled to remove caked-on hop particles.
The filters also can also be custom ordered in 15, 43, 74, and 100 micron as well (Contact us for details on ordering in a custom micron size). Each filter has a perforated stainless metal top with a filter screen welded into the top as well. The tops easily screw on and off too for easy access to the inside.
These filters have also been extremely popular with coffee brewers. Whether it's infusing flavor into regular brewed coffee or into cold brewed coffee, our customers have found them to be extremely effective! Click Here to see our corny keg filters for coffee brewing
NOTE: Check inside height on your corny keg to ensure the corny keg dry hopper your buying will fit
